Maternity Reflexology. melandleo

Maternity Reflexology

Maternity reflexology is used to nurture the woman and her baby on a physical and emotional level - pre-conceptually, throughout pregnancy, the birth itself and during the postnatal period.

During your pregnancy, your body will go through significant changes; these changes will affect the emotional, hormonal and physiological balance of your body. Reflexology can help to alleviate or prevent discomfort arising from this imbalance and restore the body’s equilibrium. Research has shown that regular reflexology treatments during pregnancy can shorten the duration of labour, with subjects often requiring less pain-relief during the course of delivery.

You can start having reflexology from the beginning of your second trimester of pregnancy up to labour. Treatments can help to rebalance you and we can focus on kick starting your body into dealing with unwanted side effects, such as..

•morning sickness/nausea
•headaches
•pain & discomfort
•stress & anxiety
•fatigue
•backache
•digestive problems/constipation

In the last few weeks of pregnancy we can prepare for labour by working on specific hormone reflex points. Many pregnant women are so relaxed during a treatment, that they get that sleep they have been hoping for! Pregnancy and giving birth is like running a marathon and then there is still more to come! It is no surprise that we can feel exhausted and overwhelmed by it all.

If you're feeling in need of a reboost, reflexology can help you. We will focus on your emotional well-being by helping you to relax and will try to encourage your hormones to get back in check by stimulating the relevant reflex points.

Birth

Many women seek the help of a reflexologist if they go over their due dates and want to avoid a hospital induction. The reflexologist will work certain points on the feet to gently encourage the body to go into labour naturally, and, if mother and baby are ready, labour may start within a few days. Reflexology can also be extremely effective during the intensity of labour itself in helping the woman keep focused and relaxed.

After the birth

Women can feel both ecstatic and exhausted as well as experiencing other conflicting emotions after the baby's birth. Loss of sleep, breastfeeding problems, frustration and fatigue etc. can all take its toll on the new family. A reflexology treatment can be wonderful at this time as well as helping with other conditions associated with the postnatal period.

Reflexology is one of the safest, most supportive therapies for pregnant women and, sensitively applied, is excellent during pregnancy and birth, both for the mother and her baby.
